Staying Alive

Is not really an issue here in Vancouver, but it might be a concern later on my trip.

Just to set the rules straight, I won't be telling stories about me doing normal travel-stuff like taking a sight-seeing bus through Hollywood or being at a party-beach on some Caribbean Island. I might do that stuff, but that's not why I'm travelling and that is not what I'm gonna waste your time with.

In return try not to be too worried about my travels - it's much safer to travel than staying at home... Crossing the street or driving to your local mall is still more dangerous than flying and only one out of 15 people in the world die of other causes than old age.

Keep this in mind! I do, when I'm visiting some of the most dangerous cities in the world such as Guatemala City, Bogotá and Caracas, crossing between Panama and Columbia in areas controlled by guerrillas, drug smugglers and paramilitaries, travel in hurricane season, hike for days through dense jungle and even when I'm getting into an overcrowded minibus that I know will be doing an average of 90 km/h on bad roads for 17 hours without the driver getting any rest...

All of the above are characterizing my summer 'vacation' this year - at least from when I'm leaving LA on May 10th - but I've survived places like Nairobi, Beirut, the West Bank, Sudan and two days in a Malagasy jungle without food on earlier travels, so the worst case scenario on this trip is unlikely to be more than me being robbed at gunpoint, losing 10 bucks and my camera.

But what if my luck is running out? Staying alive is rarely about luck, if you come prepared, stay smart and don't panic, you'll have good chances of ending up like the 14 out of 15 who die of old age!

I'm not gonna walk alone into a Columbian jungle to wait for FARC, and I'm not getting in a boat if weather's is shitty, and I'm not gonna visit the slums of Guatemala City 2a.m. - but there will be on-the-edge, extraordinary situations, and those will be what comes on this blog.

Have a good one and stay safe, while you're crossing the street back home!

The route will be as follows:

Canada

USA (Washington, Oregon and California only)

Mexico (southern part only)

After this I'll have to rush through the northern part of the following countries to get the only decent priced plane ticket to Europe from French Guyana:

Hope you drop by a check out my trip, just once in a while :)

Cheers
