As soon as we arrived to Huangshan I was relieved, finally a smaller city (1,5million people) and old Chinese architecture! We arrived at 5am and checked in at the Old Street Youth Hostel to get some sleep. The next two days went by as we explored the city by bike and chilled out at the hostel to get our energy back before climbing Mt. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain). Not being able to eat that much for a week we had to get some "salts and minerals" from the pharmacy to mix with our drinking water. Tasted like crap but at least we felt better afterwards!
On Monday morning we took a local bus to the Yellow mountain and started our hike to the top of the mountain. The Yellow Mountain is known for its unusual nature and 100 million-year old rocks and bizarre stones shaped as animals or other weird things. Four hours, 10km and about one million stairs up to the top was tougher than we imagined...The closer we got to the top the less we could see because of the clouds. The weather was good on our way up so we got to enjoy the beautiful views of the mountain, but at the time we got to the top we were inside the clouds so we couldn't see more than a few meters ahead. Tired and hungry we found our way to the "hotel" and went to look for something to eat. This is when everything started to go wrong... We went to the restaurant and paid crazy much money for a portion of food we thought we could choose but instead they gave us a plate with a few beans, cucumber and tomatos and then shoveled some smelly and disgusting fish, or left overs of a fish on top of everything. Hungry as we were we left the restaurant to buy some corn from a stand outside. The corn was so dry and tasteless that it was almost impossible to eat. I was still hungry so I decided to eat my last "sweetbread" I had in my backpack but as I was taking the first bite it fell on the ground! Martin started to laugh like crazy as I just thought that "this is not funny!" Finally I took a draught of my cold beer and soon everything felt better again! It might not sound that terrible for you readers but when you've climbed 10km only stairs it feels like the world is against you if everything doesn't go as wanted :D
The next morning we got up at 5am to see the sunrise. Sadly we couldn't see anything because of the bad weather, even though we were at the highest point (1864m). Not that we would have been able to enjoy the beutiful and peaceful sunrise anyway because about one hundred chinese tourists were surrounding us. Still a bit sleepy, my head was about to expload when two guides started to shout to their microphones next to us! What's up with these people?!?! It's 5 o'clock in the morning so be quiet!
After having instant noodles for breakfast we started our hike down the mountain. It started to rain so we couldn't go to the "Heavelny city" because it was slippery, and we probably woulnd't have seen anything anyway... We only got a clear view for a couple of hours and saw the "amazing" diagonal joints reaching for the coulds and a rock shaped like a mobile phone :) At the cable car station we met Carla who I had changed I few words with the night before and she joined us for the rest of the way. I was not surprised when she told us that she is from Germany! Together we walked anohter 8km down the stairs, sadly it was raining the whole time so we couldn't see anything except fog. In hope to see the waterfalls and get to bath in a hot spring we continued a coulple of kilometers further, to find out that the waterfall was dry and the hot springs were tourist attractions which you had to pay for. We already spent so much money for the entrance fee and sleeping on the mountain that we decided to head back to the city.
I feel like I didn't get as much out of the mountain trip as I wanted to because of the bad weather and amount of tourists! I didn't expect it too be so crowded during weekdays and it totally ruined the peaceful athmosphere! We tried to ignore the noice by listening to music but that didn't make us feel so much better either. Overall it still was an amazing and fun trip, which would have been even greater with less tourists pushing us around.
When we got back to the city we changed our hostel to a cheaper one and are now resting here until tomorrow. Hopefully we get traintickets to Kunming and get to continue our journey to Dali!
