Bukittinggi.
Rajawali Homestay - run by Ulrich a German guy married to an Indonesian woman. They have a grown and married daughter. He is very very laid-back and found usually holding his 7 month old grand son who is really cute, and was born during the earthquake. In these circumstances he is unlikely to do anything else, even if you say hello he might decline since he is holding the baby! Ulrich does not appear to care or spend much money on the place, pretty clever really as there is a constant stream of people arriving and leaving. The building is on a cross road and within a very close distance of a number of mosques. Most of the windows are luvre and cant close at all. floors are barely covered with bits of lino. The noise of the traffic late at night consists of someone riding their bike up and down the road, pretty noisy but I can bet it is just a little scooter made to sound loud. The call to prayer begins about 4.15 in the morning, repeated around 7, 11, and twice more in the afternoon/evening. The daytime traffic starts even before the morning call for prayer! While I was unwell I managed to sleep through most of this. As I was feeling better and not completely knocked out by my cold but still very tired and delirious I was beginning to take some of the noise personally! The call to prayer with added; flourishes by the caller fancying himself as some kind of artist was driving me mad, I had plans of cutting the sound cables!!
